25 years ago lighting in a residential environment was basic to say the least. Many rooms had a single pendant in the centre of the room and a switch by the door. Kitchens often featured a 6ft fluorescent as the requirement for task lighting was greater and the length of time the light was on made this type of fitting a natural choice. By the mid 90's the downlight revolution had begun, out went the fluorescent and in came multiple halogen downlights to perform the same duty. Lighting was becoming part of the architecture albeit at the cost of increased power consumption as the lamp of choice became the 50watt halogen.

The number of downlights soon added up within the installation with 4 to 6 per room becoming acceptable. Increasing from a single 60watt or 100watt lamp to 300+watts of halogen lighting became the norm. Some alternatives such as compact fluorescent lamps tried to challenge the halogen but never really took off because of the time taken to achieve full brightness. Instant it was certainly not.

Fast forward to 2010 and the realisation that energy was becoming an expensive commodity, and the pressure to become more environmentally aware led to the introduction of LED technology. This has moved rapidly in recent years and today it is used in most locations. Lamps and fittings for task, accent and mood lighting are all readily available. Add to that the addition of colour and the significantly lower power consumption and you begin to see why many think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Careful selection, deployment and control can result in an amazing effect. We have taken some very ordinary rooms and transformed them in to multifunctional places simply by the selecting and installing the lighting correctly.
